The Rolls Royce 17EX

The Rolls Royce Project initiated about 6 years ago is the perfect jewel in the crown of my creativity and automobile engineering quest, produced from scrap and scratch. It has given me the utmost satisfaction of replicating a vintage classic Rolls Royce of 1927 era a 17EX, the original car was an order of HH Maharaja Hari Singh ji of Kashmir who had dozens of Rolls Royces but none could reach the top speed of 100MPH. The 17 EX (EX stood for Experimental) was developed especially for him and had the capability of the golden figure of 100MPH. This original car after changing a few owners here in India finally landed in Switzerland in spite of the export restrictions imposed by the Government on the ban of export of antiques. One of the Indian collectors of such antique automobiles got a scrap of an old 1927 Rolls Royce Phantom-1 that had just the chassis and some mechanical bits, only to me for restoration and a complete buildup. To start this project, I first bought a book written by one of our famous Indian automobile author Gautam Sen on the history of this car, in which there were some close-up detailed photographs of the original car now running in Europe. Without any Blue Print or technical data, I started to first strip whatever residue of the car I had got to work upon. Then one by one I meticulously overhauled each unit and after sand blasting the chassis, primed & painted it with preservative compounds started reassembling the overhauled and rebuilt units like the front & rear suspension, brakes, rear differential, drive shaft, gearbox, clutch assembly, brakes servo and the engine. The toughest unit of all was the Engine build up. Apparently during the course of its service in the Royalty Garages someone having a grudge either with the in charge of the mechanical transport MT, in army lingo, or with the owner, sabotaged the engine by putting Emery/ Mud into the oil sump which churned up with the oil and seized the engine. The evidence of which is attached in photographs below. –Now this posed one of the biggest challenges for me as this process of emery in oil and getting churned up with the lubricant destroyed totally some of the moving parts of the engine, the biggest destruction was the Oil-Pump and the Crank Shaft & its bearings. Getting a new or a working oil pump became an issue as I searched the entire web and finally got one organisation in UK that replicates parts for these Veteran & Vintage automobiles. Their condition was that they will give me a replicated pump but they wanted six months’ time for doing the job plus the order has to be at least three pumps, either by me or any other who requires it. But one pump would cost three thousand five hundred UK Pounds Sterling and they wanted fifty percent of the total money in advance. Now with my back to the wall and having sleepless nights I finally took on the challenge of either adapting a similar capacity oil pump of one of the engines available here in India or re-manufacture the same with new components. Having confidence that the technology and raw material is all available here in our country why not give it a shot. Surly the challenge taken worked and in just a question of five to six weeks I got the Pump ready that had a slight over capacity and is working excellently. The next big challenge was trying to put together all the missing bits of the car and some of the major parts were like- the Radiator, Radiator Shutters, Carburettor, distributor, all the dash-board meters, the magneto distributor and many other detailed items including the wheel rim, one of which went missing mysteriously from our garage. One by one, slowly but surely, I got my hands on each item, reworked on almost all of them as none of these were complete and working units and I had to remanufacture a lot of internal parts to get them into working order, the photos of which are attached below that explains how much of innovativeness and ingenuity I had to use during the course of six years that took me to collate all these together. In Covid times of almost three years, I had a full-fledged workshop with almost all the equipment’s required here in my house and alone I used to work on each item. Sometimes when my youngest grandson Vir was with us, he used to share his hand with me. I re-created the complete dash board along with all the meters and instruments in working condition, some of these meters had their internal parts & bits missing that I got made and reassembled like new. Besides all the chrome work now is in the best grade Stainless Steel that I managed to create here in my house that included the rear passenger windscreens and its frames front quarter glass frames etc etc. Having put together all these units and make this project look like a real photo copy of the 17EX, with every bit looking & performing like that of the original vehicle, we entered this car in the 57th Statesman’s Vintage and Classic car rally in 2024 and got the Best Restored & rebuilt Vehicle of the Show after it completed 65km to 70 km of the rally route.
